DNC Chair Statement on GOP Unwillingness to Address Gun Violence

WASHINGTON – DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz issued the following statement on House Republicans' unwillingness to address gun violence:

“Yesterday, surrounded by Democrats staging an unprecedented sit-in on the House floor, I was touched by the many stories we heard that the American people have become all too familiar with, about the victims of gun violence and their families. I read one of those stories aloud from a letter written by my dear friend and former colleague Gabby Giffords. Gabby’s life changed instantly five years ago when a deranged gunman opened fire as she spoke to a crowd of her constituents, killing six innocent people and injuring thirteen, including Gabby. She wrote, ‘speaking is difficult for me. But I haven’t been silenced. And neither should the American people. Their Representatives must vote to prevent gun violence.’

“But Speaker Paul Ryan, and the Republicans he leads want nothing more than to silence the debate on reforming our gun laws. And because they currently hold the majority, they have been able to block even a simple vote on the commonsense laws that Democrats and a majority of Americans want to see passed. Enough is enough. That’s why I’m proud to join my colleagues to sit in and stand strong for the American people. But we cannot stop here. Elections have consequences, and we cannot achieve true progress if our elected leaders stand with the gun lobby instead of the people. Democrats believe our nation is stronger when we work together. We must elect more Democrats to the House and Senate, and a Democrat as our next president to end the obstruction, end the silence and stand up for 90% of Americans who agree that someone who isn’t allowed to fly because they’re on a terror watch list should not be able to buy guns, assault weapons and explosives.”
